From values and principles to responsibility and action
Civic Courage is a reflective and practice-oriented course that explores courage and personal responsibility in professional life, organisations, and society. Grounded in human rights principles and ethical reflection, the course invites participants to examine how courage can be understood, developed, and exercised when facing difficult decisions, pressure, or moral dilemmas.
The programme moves from theory to practice, encouraging participants to reflect on their own values, roles, and responsibilities—both as professionals and as citizens. Through dialogue, case discussions, and guided reflection, participants explore what it means to act with integrity, to speak up when something is wrong, and to take responsibility even when doing so involves risk or discomfort.
Course themes include:
- What is civic courage, and how does it relate to personal and professional responsibility?
- Human rights as a foundation for ethical action
- Courage in everyday decision-making, leadership, and organisational life
- Identifying obstacles, risks, and support structures for courageous action
- From reflection to action: translating values into concrete practice
The course emphasises learning through dialogue and shared experience. Participants are encouraged to draw on real-life situations from their own work and context, and to explore how courage can be exercised at different levels—individually, within groups, organisations, and society at large.
Learning approach
Civic Courage combines short lectures with facilitated discussions, small-group work, and practical exercises. Participants work with reflection, scenario analysis, and action planning, with the aim of developing both insight and practical tools that can be applied in everyday professional and civic life.
The course can be offered as a short intensive programme or as a series of sessions over time, and may be adapted to the needs of specific organisations or groups.
Civic Courage reflects the Edelstam Institute’s commitment to strengthening human rights, ethical leadership, and responsibility through education, dialogue, and lived experience.
