Sweden in Depth

A comprehensive introduction to Swedish society, politics, and global engagement

Sweden in Depth was a multi-day executive education programme designed for diplomats and international professionals seeking a deeper, structured understanding of Sweden’s political system, values, and role in the world. The course combined high-level policy analysis with perspectives from public institutions, civil society, academia, media, and the arts.

Delivered in Stockholm, the programme offered participants a broad yet detailed overview of how Sweden functions as a democracy, welfare state, and international actor—with particular attention to human rights, foreign policy, social innovation, and current global challenges.

Course focus and content

Over three days, Sweden in Depth covered the following thematic areas:

Swedish diplomacy and human rights
The programme opened with an introduction to Sweden’s diplomatic legacy and its longstanding commitment to human rights, both domestically and internationally. Participants explored Sweden’s role in promoting human rights norms, asylum policies, and the practical implementation of international conventions.

Politics, governance, and the welfare state
Sessions provided an in-depth overview of Sweden’s political system, including government, parliament, and the Riksdag, as well as the foundations of the Nordic welfare model. Topics included family policy, gender equality, children’s rights, and the societal impact of movements such as #MeToo.

International aid, trade, and global engagement
The course examined Sweden’s development cooperation and international aid architecture, alongside trade policy and Sweden’s positioning in a complex geopolitical landscape involving the EU, the United States, and China. Economic and social innovation within the Nordic model was discussed in relation to sustainability and long-term competitiveness.

Security, defence, and contemporary challenges
Participants engaged with current security issues, including the war in Europe and its implications for Sweden, as well as Sweden’s evolving defence and security posture. The programme also addressed democratic resilience, elections, and political participation.

Civil society, climate, and global responsibility
A key component of the course focused on Sweden’s strong civil society and the role of Nordic countries in addressing climate change and global sustainability challenges, highlighting cooperation between public institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.

Media, culture, and public discourse
The programme explored Sweden’s media landscape, freedom of the press, and how journalism functions in practice. Cultural perspectives—including food, art, and storytelling—were integrated to provide a more holistic understanding of Swedish society and identity.

Foreign policy and Sweden’s role in the world
The course concluded with an overview of Swedish foreign policy priorities and diplomatic strategy, placing Sweden’s international engagement in a broader global context.
